Comic Book Prices From eBay Sold Listings: Raw vs CGC, Keys and Variants

To price a comic book, search eBay sold listings for the exact title, issue number and cover variant, then split raw copies from graded (CGC/CBCS) ones and match the grade. Exclude lots and runs, and use the median of recent sales. Graded copies of key issues can sell for many times a raw copy, so mixing them gives a wrong price. Price guides are a reference; recent sales show the current market.

Comics have the same pricing problem as trading cards, with more variables: printings, cover variants, newsstand vs direct editions, and a grading scale from 0.5 to 10. A price guide gives you a reference. What a copy sells for depends on all of those details, and recent sales are the best evidence.

Step 1: identify the exact book

  • Title and volume: many series restart at #1.
  • Issue number.
  • Cover and variant: cover A/B, 1:25 ratio variants, virgin covers.
  • Printing: first printings usually carry the value.
  • Edition: newsstand copies of some modern books sell for more than direct editions.

Search with all of them: amazing spider-man 300 newsstand, not spiderman 300.

Step 2: raw vs graded

A raw copy and a CGC 9.8 of the same key issue can be very far apart. Search each separately:

  • Raw: add -cgc -cbcs -pgx -graded -slab
  • Graded: add the grade in quotes: "cgc 9.8"

Adjacent grades matter too. 9.6 vs 9.8 is often a big jump on keys.

Step 3: clean the sales

  • Skip runs and lots ("#1-10", "lot of 25").
  • Watch for signature series and restored (purple label) copies; they're different markets.
  • Ignore the single highest and lowest sale, then use the median of recent sales.
  • Some "sold" prices aren't real. How to spot them.

Step 4: key issues move fast

Media announcements (a character in a movie or show) can move a key issue's price within days. For hot books, compare the last two weeks of sales against the 90-day median.

Pricing a long box

Most comics in a long box are worth little; a few keys carry the value. Pull the keys and graded books, list them in a sheet with title, issue, variant and grade, and price them all at once with the =SOLDMEDIAN() formula. Or try a few in the sold comps lookup.

Building a comics app or a sniping tool? One query per book-and-grade, cached for a day, is the same pattern card apps use. Pricing a big catalog efficiently.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find out what my comic book is worth?

Search eBay sold listings for the title, issue number and cover variant, match raw or the exact CGC grade, skip lots, and use the median of recent sales.

Is a comic book price guide accurate?

Guides are useful references, but recent sold prices show what buyers pay now, especially for key issues and graded copies whose prices move quickly.

How much more is a CGC-graded comic worth?

It depends on the issue and grade. Common books may not be worth the grading cost, while high grades of key issues can sell for many times a raw copy. Compare raw and graded sales of the same issue.
