Used Auto Parts Prices by Part Number From eBay Sold Listings

Price used auto parts by searching eBay sold listings for the exact OEM part number in quotes, not a description. Titles are noisy, and eBay's loose matching mixes in parts for other vehicles. Include interchange numbers as separate searches, exclude cores and 'for parts' listings, and use the median of recent sales. For many parts, look them up from a spreadsheet or an API instead of one by one.
Search for an exact OEM part number returning a median sold price of $164 from 23 sales, with universal fit and core-only listings excluded

Auto parts are one of the hardest things to comp on eBay. Titles are long, fitment lists mention dozens of vehicles, and eBay's search pads results generously. One parts seller searched a part number and found the "exact match" was "a steering wheel for a 2023 ford expedition."

The fix: price by part number, not description.

Step 1: search the exact OEM number

Put the part number in quotes so it has to appear:

"68233435AB"

Not "2015 Ram 1500 alternator". That pulls in every alternator that mentions a Ram anywhere in its fitment list.

Step 2: exclude the noise

Add minus words for listings that aren't comparable:

  • -core: core charges and core-only sales
  • -universal: "fits many" aftermarket parts
  • -"for parts" -untested: unless that's what you're selling
  • -lot: multi-part bundles

Step 3: check interchange numbers

Manufacturers supersede part numbers, and many parts fit multiple vehicles under different numbers. Search each interchange number separately and compare medians. If one number sells for much more, list under that number too (where it's accurate).

Step 4: condition and format

Used OEM, remanufactured and new aftermarket are different markets. Filter condition to match yours. For expensive parts, compare auction and Buy It Now sales; they often differ. Why.

Step 5: use the median, and check speed

Take the median of recent clean sales. Then check how often it sells: clean sales in 90 days ÷ 13 = sales per week. Parts sellers live and die by sell-through. Experienced sellers anchor on part numbers and fitment because, as one put it, if you can't separate real buyer demand from search noise, "the sell-through number isn't worth much." Sell-through rate explained.

Pricing a whole yard's inventory

For dozens or hundreds of part numbers, put them in a spreadsheet and use the =SOLDMEDIAN() formula, one row per number:

Part numberMedian sold (used)
"68233435AB" -core -universal=SOLDMEDIAN(A2, "used")
"56029651AB" -core=SOLDMEDIAN(A3, "used")

Building parts software? The same query works over the API, and quoted numbers must appear in the title of every returned sale:

curl "https://api.soldcomps.io/v1/sold?q=%2268233435AB%22+-core&condition=used" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $SALEHISTORY_KEY"

Try a part number in the sold comps lookup.

Frequently asked questions

How do I price a used auto part?

Search eBay sold listings for the exact OEM part number in quotes, in used condition. Exclude cores, 'for parts' and universal-fit listings, then take the median of recent sales.

Why does eBay show the wrong parts when I search a part number?

eBay adds 'results matching fewer words' and listings that mention your number only as a fitment note. Put the part number in quotes and add minus words like -universal and -core.

What is an interchange number?

Different part numbers that fit the same vehicles, often because a manufacturer superseded an old number. Search the main number and its interchange numbers separately and compare.
